Synopsis of Short film. [Untitled]

When 3 people move into a house strange events begin to unfold. As the characters are unpacking their belongings, they decide to put some things into the garage. Whilst putting a box on a shelf, one of the characters finds a strange book, hidden. They bring the book into the house and one of the characters cannot resist the temptation to read it. When the character opens the book they find a progression of pictures, showing the characters all dead, and how they were murdered. They think it is then up to them to do the books bidding and begins to murder their friends. After killing of their friends, the character goes back to the book to find just one picture left. Her jumping from the second story window. Focus goes back onto the book where a hand comes and picks up the book, her hand has a drawing of the books symbol on it. Then some time passes, and we see an estate agent showing some new people around a house, she opens the door and we see that it is the same symbol as the person who picks up the book.

Top 15 Disney Villain Deaths

If we wanted to morph all our 3 ideas together we could capture the idea of fairy tales by using the deaths of the villains in disney films.

Sinister - Official Trailer [HD]

The Sinister trailer is incredibly relevant for our ideas because it pretty much contains two of our ideas mashed together, our possessed book concept and our slender man idea. This could be something we could think about doing to our ideas because we are struggling to pick one idea.

The Slender Games - HISHE

This is the HISHE parody of the hunger games with a slender man spin on it. This is relevant towards our film ideas because one of our initial thoughts was to create a hunger games parody, and also we have a Slenderman idea that we are carrying onto our final 3 ideas.

Inspiration: Daywalt horror

Daywalt Fear Factor: http://www.youtube.com/user/DaywaltFearFactory

They are a YouTube channel that write and produce short films. The genre of the films are all horror/thriller. while thinking about what genre and how I wanted our short film to be like I got a lot of my initial ideas from watching the 'Daywalt Horror' series on YouTube because their short films attract the audiences attention immediately and the stories in the films are creative and original and presented in the way that they are able to have the desired affect on the audience; which is to scare people and to spark a reaction in their imagination. which is the effect I want our film to have.

Final Idea for short film

We have finalised our film ready for the development and have decided to go with a Slenderman story which is read out in this video:

In our movie there will be multiple differences compared to the story told by the guy on the video, for example in contrast to the female character within the spoken story our main character will male, and there will be no peep hole but instead a letterbox.

In crafting the ultimate slenderman experience i propose that the slenderman character not to be played but instead edited in in post production.

The setting of our movie will be in a council estate in a sleepy town - the perfect setting for a grizzly horror story, where evil lurks round every corner unknowing to the community.

At a pre-production stage, there will be 3/4 characters all will different roles. The main character will be  present throughout the film, from the beginning in a day scene walking round and going about a simple day to day routine, before going home where we meet the 2nd character, the main character's friend. who appears before the first encounter of slender man showing a sort of 'calm before the storm' that everything is alright and providing a false sense of security. Thirdly the person playing the bottom half of slenderman will be introduced whilst peeping through the letterbox before the final encounter with the dreaded slenderman,

Analyzing a short film

The short film I decided to analyses is called unwind it is inspired by a novel by Neal Shusterman. It is based after a war on abortion, a compromise was reached, allowing parents to sign an order for their children aged between 13 and 18 to be unwound – taken to harvest camps where there body parts would be harvested for later use. This particular film is about a young girl who about get harvested by two doctors.

 Camera shots
Throughout this short film their isn’t a lot of different types of camera shots, but more of the same shots used over again. One of the main shots used is a extreme close up of the young girls eyes. This is used to give nothing away about her identity but also shows how scared she is. There are also a lot of high angle close ups of the female nurse, this is used to show the audience what the young girl is seeing herself. This shot also helps you picture who the other people are. There are also a number of close ups of the male doctor again from the young girls point of view. This also shows the audience what the man is doing without giving two much away. There are also a number of closes up shots of things around the room for example; hospital equipment and things on the celling. This helps the audience to picture the room and establish where it set is.

 Sounds
Throughout the film there are a number of diegetic sounds, for example throughout the entire film there is the sound of a live support machine which speeds up at the end. This sound makes the film more dramatic as you associate it with hospital and no something is happening when it speeds up. There are also the sounds of other hospital equipment you can’t see like drills. This makes it more exciting from the audience as it make you want to know what is happening. Finally there is the sound of the young girls breathing with gets louder in different parts of the film. This shows when she is most scared and makes the film more exciting

 Mise en scene
This film as a number of props used which makes the film more successful. The costumes they were helps the audience understand what is happening in the film and also makes it more realistic. It also shows the audience who the characters are. Also the room itself also helps the audience establish where the film is set, with the big white room and bright light on the celling; it’s easy to tell there in hospital.

Brainstorm Ideas

As a group we came up with a few ideas that we would like to do for our project this year. One of our ideas was to do a spoof, some examples of spoofs are; Scary movie, Vampires suck and epic movie. A spoof is a film that most takes the mick out of another by changing parts of the film to make them funny and by adding different parts of over films to it.

Scary movie is a good example of a spoof as it takes the mick out of the horror,  Scream but also adds parts of different films

Another idea we had was to take a fairy tale but to put a modern more scary twist on it, so it doesn’t have such a happily ever after ending. We got inspiration for this of things like the Grimm brother fairy tales; they stick to the basic story line but make it more dark and scary. Also the television series, Once upon a time shows what we are trying to do but taking a fairy tale but adding it to the modern world bringing it more up to date.

Brainstorm ideas for media project.

For the project this year i had a few ideas for what type of media product to create. For example the first type of movie i would like to make would be a parody movie, such as scary movie, Stan helsing or Disaster movie, crafting a movie from one or several different movies and then exaggerating the story line.
Stan helsing for example takes the story line of Van Helsing the popular horror movie and twists it, bringing it into the present day with some help from Slapstick comedy.

Another movie i would try to make would be a movie in the form of popular media icon, Slender man, for example a point of view movie with a close encounter featuring the mystical being. Possibly using special effects for the slenderman character.

Analysis of a short film.

The short film I decided to analyse was Portal: No escape. A film about a subject trapped inside a processing facility who has to make her way around with one of their experimental weapons. The film can be found here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4drucg1A6Xk

Camera
In terms of camera work the film uses various different methods, including close up shots and over the shoulder shots. And at different points in the film it even incorporates the role of a security camera within the subject’s cell, showing her sleep and allowing the viewer to see the amount of stress the subject is subjected to whilst in captivity. Focus’ and zoom is also used within the film showing the subject’s revelation of inscriptions on the wall of her cell upon first discovering the portal gun. The camera also emphasises the story of the portal gun showing it’s capabilities and making it attractive to the audience.
Whilst the camera is documenting the actor during it’s time as the security camera  the angle is a high angle shot looking down on the character showing that she is in a vulnerable position as apposed to a low angle shot where she would be in control of the situation.

Editing

The editing of the short film is very professional using different special effects including the effect of the  portal gun on it’s surrounding environment. To show the passage of time, the scene is fast forwarded whilst the camera is acting as the security camera, this may be to document the actor’s passage whilst in captivity while she is getting in touch with her surroundings and plotting her escape.

Lighting.
The lighting of the envoironment shows that the facility where the film takes place is a derelict facility, creating many shadows, until she is outside and what she thinks to be is free. Inside whilst battling through the facility with the guards the lighting is dim, showing that she is trapped, unable to escape, until she gets outside, which is well light and in the middle of the day. During the time in which she is outside, the light shows that the character has nearly escaped. Until reaching the wall that is not real in which the camera pans to the dark past the simulated wall, showing that she isn’t able to escape as she once thought drowning her hopes.

Mise-en-scene
There are a lot of items in the movie which help with the film the most obvious is the weapon that the unnamed main character weilds. As the movie is based on an xbox 360 game, the viewer would be expecting the real thing, and the gun in the movie is nearly the exact same within the game. Adding to a sense of continuity to form the series from game to video but to also engage with the viewer who may have  played the game and to come to expect the gun within the movie. The characters clothing is tatty and food is shoved through the door at regular intervals, this along with the guards wearing body armour makes it obvious that the movie is set in a prison or facility as the game is.
