Todd and the book of pure evil.

The short film Todd and the book of pure evil was produced through the Canadian Film centre’s Short Dramatic Film Program, and kicked off an international festival tour by opening at the Toronto international film festival in 2003. This film explores the a short time in a high school which has an interaction with the book of pure evil, promising to deliver what ever you wish for, as long as you summon Satan.

The first thing we see in the short film
is various shots of typical sacrifice looking things. As well as a horror vinyl, these objects instantly allow the view to understand that this is a horror genre that people will die in. These simple yet effective pieces of symbolism are very interesting and i think they are really clever because it sets of the whole tone for the rest of the film. Alos the limited lighting in this scene gives the impressing of dark themes in the film.

The short film follows the lead character Todd. Todd is a typical outcast underdog and therefore creates a strong lead as this sort of film is more of a controversial style. Todd is the first character to be seen in the film. You are instantly aware that he isn’t one of the most popular people in school because of his appearance. His hear is greasy and un-styled, and his face is a mess with spots. Although, these intentional wardrobe choices could leave us to understand more about what is going to happen in the play. Having an unpopular person as the lead allows the audience to believe there must be something special about him or else he wouldn’t be the main character, leaving the idea that the book, even though it sounds like a good idea could be the complete opposite. Just like Todd.

The opening title sequence is a progression of changing satanic and sacrificial symbols that spin around the middle, it has a up beat yet still quite daunting track over the top and has lightning featured in the track. I think this opening is a really good idea. The music at the in this title sequence is catchy and is featured again throughout the film leaving it having an iconic feel to it. The titles start of with the words “book of pure evil” literally coming off the book and onto the title sequence, the type is kept the same, and matches the book, throughout the title sequence allowing it to flow properly and making it look really good.
