lolololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololol.

Question 1

When initially thinking about how we wanted our movie to be presented, we had to research into the conventions of a thriller movie and its sub genres in order for us to see how the shorts are taken so we could incorporate them into our own film. However, while filming multiple shots from many obscure angles we had to constantly think about the continuity of our film. During breaks from filming we ensured the set of our film stayed the same and that the characters profiling remained the same. But also, while taking multiple shots we had to be aware not to break the 180 degree rule.

As we chose to use thriller I researched into the difference between a horror movie and a thriller movie and found that a horror movie is supposed to make the audience feel scared for themselves where as a thriller movie is supposed to make an audience feel the suspension and be nervous about the characters safety and so when filing I tried to ensure the audience was always worried and concerned about the female characters in the film. We used lighting to show the villain and the victims. The villain ben we chose to show in dark lighting which we contrasted with the two females shown in bright lighting to show his malicious ways.

we chose to set our movie in just a house so we could give the audience the feel of entrapment but also because of the title. As the legal definition of a domestic says that they all have to live in the same house which we thought was a brilliant idea for us to present as it shows real actions which ultimately have devastating consequences.

The setting:

when choosing the characters we wanted to make sure they fitted what type of person we had in mind. We wanted one female to be quite shy and wanting to keep to themselves but we also wanted the girlfriend of the killer to be a strong woman to really show how brutal our villain is.

Kirsten Taylor. Shy

Louise Noble.strong woman

Our film sticks to the codes and conventions of a thriller as we chose to avoid deliberate pastiche or make a parody of a thriller. We aimed to keep our film stay with the codes and conventions because we hope that this would be more real for an audience; in turn making it slightly terrifying because and audience will be witnessing the brutality of a thriller and we avoided Referencing to other films as we did not think it would be appropriate to do so.

I personally feel our film does not live up to his full potential as a thriller is supposed to lead up the suspense in  order to make the death scenes feel more shocking to watch. I think if we would have given more character build up and allowed the audience to connect with them more it would have had more of an effect however I think it does still comply with the conventions of a thriller. Our movie still received good feedback from the audience.

I think our movie is quite similar to an american thriller named 'The Roomate' as it has similar themes to ours such as; murder and jealously.

Question 4

Blogger- using this platform in order to record our progress throughout each of the different stages of making our final production. This also allowed all of our team to access each of the documents to ensure we always knew where we were, view scripts that we wrote up on ‘Microsoft Word’ and we were able to record our research.

Photoshop- we used Photoshop to design and make our Goldfish On A Tricycle logo to ensure we had a professional logo that we could put on all our products. We also used Photoshop to make our film poster. It enabled us to give our poster an unnatural effect with a dark contrast to show the theme of our film.

Final cut- We used Final Cut to do all our film editing on as it had all the features that we needed to ensure our film looked how we hoped it would look. We used this because it allowed more of our ideas to be incorporated into our final film. We were able to use the colour corrector tool to make sure that the water in the bathroom clip stayed the same. As she is being drowned while wearing a towel when planning the clip we didn’t think about the towel running but we ensured it stayed the same colour.

We used Google and YouTube as our main place for research and it made sure we were able to find useful information that we could incorporate into our film

When recording our sound for the voice over we used a zoom recorder and used a sound proof room so the sound would be clear with no echo, we needed to do this so the sound sounded great for us to use in our radio trailer

Question Two

Question Two
1, In what way dose the media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

A, For our film we have used a number of common media features for example; the 180 degree rule and also following continuity while filming and editing. This made our film a success because we followed the common conventions of standard film making. Also we used our main theme of thriller thought out our short film so we could use some main film features to make our film better and more interesting for example we used fast editing for the murder scenes to make them more exciting and intense. This effect worked really well and made these particular scenes more jumpy and aggressive. We also used lighting to represent different things in our film, for example we used lighting to represent the more dominant figure in the scene and also to show which the darker character is. i also believe the locations and costumes we choose worked really well too as they all fit in with the scenes we were trying to create. The fact we only used one location througthout our film maked it easier for us to film and also was easier for us to plan where we would be filming and also where we could place the chameras to get the best effect.

(Lighting example)                                                                                               (location and clothing example)

B. For our film we decided to focus on the genra of thriller. I believe we stuck to the genre throught out the films as we have some key features of a thriller film. for example we have a number of exciting and aressive murder sences which will make the audiance jump and want to whats going to happen next. We have all played with how we edited our film to making it fit to our genre more. for example we played with the sound to make some sences more loud and gramatic where as others are quite and more sinister. we have also added different songs to fit with each sence to make more interesent. the music we choose also fits which our genra of thriller because some soungs are slow and dramatic whereas others have loud parts which get peoples attention and stand out. As a typical thrillar contains fast exciting sences aswell as a twisted storyline i believe we have succesfully stuck to a typical thriller storyline. I also think we stuck to the thriller storyline as it is something that could happen to really people, also the fact that at the end of the film it shows him asking for more room mates makes people wonder if he will kill again or if he will get found out.

C I don’t believe our films parody or pastiche any of the codes in a thriller as it sticks to the common aspects of a traditional thriller. We didn’t want are film to have any aspects of any other films so we intentionally tried to keep away from referencing towards any other films. We did this because we wanted our own film to be believable and not be a copy of any other. We believes by linking are film or using ideas from other films would make our film less believable and the audience wouldn't just watching it for the storyline it has but would compare it to the other film, and we didn’t want that.

D I believe are film as a lot of audience pleasers and factors that make it more interesting for the audience. I believe we created a successful five minuet thriller film that has many aspects or a traditional thriller that would please an audience. For example I believe altering our pace of editing to make it faster and more jumpy made the film more interesting and I believe would make the audience want to know what was going to happen next. I also think the murder scenes would please the audience are they are exciting and look realistic as our actresses did actually throw themselves down the stairs and put their heads underwater. I believe this made it more interesting for the audience as the reactions were real making the audience actually believe the scene.I also believe that the audience got pleasure from the fact that the film was realistic and could actually happen to real people. This makes it easier for audience to get entertainment from the film, they can relax and forget about their own lives and focus on what’s happening on the telly. The audience could also get integration and social integration as the film is something they could watch with their friends and also tell others about, so more people would watch it.

E, The Roommate

The Roommate is a film that is similar to our storyline as it is about friendship, jealousy and murder. These are some of the main features of our film. The main character is Sara Mathews who is starting her freshman year at college. She immediately befriends her roommate Rebecca and thinks she is a normal nice girl. As time goes on, Rebecca becomes obsessed with Sara who causes her to become increasingly violent and she tries to drive away anyone who could come between them. Although this film isn’t about a boyfriend jealous over his girlfriend’s friends, I still think it links well as her roommates doesn’t like her being with anyone else and want her all to herself just like in our film.

Even though the villain in our film is a man and in 'The roommate' a woman I still think they share some similar qualities. Both characters are obsessed with another person who they want to themselves and gets jealous of others being with her or getting to close with her. Both characters share the same sadistic trait that they would kill anyone that would want to get close to the person they want. Also at the end of both films the villain are willing to kill the girl there obsessed with rather than anyone else them. Although in out film the villain actually succeeds in killing her I still think this is a similarity that they both try to kill them.
I believe this film as lots of similarities to ours and this films audience would probably be the same to the one we chose for our own film. Also the fact the film is called 'The Roommate' and it is actually about one roommate getting obsessed with another fits with our own storyline really well as ours is about a boy murdering his two roommates. Although not all aspects of the film fit with ours, like the fact the villain dies at the end. I believe our film ending is better as the audience will wonder what is going to happen to him and if he is going to get away with murdering the two girls.
  Both killers

Question 4
Google blogger
Google blogger- We have used Google blogger for both our projects we have done. It’s a good way to record all the work we have done over the year. It also a way we could all see what work had been done and also needs to be done. It’s easy to get to and also easy to use. You are able to create essays as well as power points, mind maps and upload videos. This makes it easier for us to upload any work we do. Also blogger worked really well to the fact we could all have our own accounts aswell as still being able to look at other people in our groups work to see what had been done and what need tobe done.

Final Cut Express
Final cut express - This was a main part of our project as it allowed us to create are actual film. We used this to put together the clips we filmed to create our film, Domesticated. By using this we were able to adjust the sounds on our film, the colouring of our film and add different effects to make our film look more professional and creative. For example we affected the colours of scenes that are too dark or bright to all the clips looked the same. We also added fades to symbolize end of scenes. We were also able to add writing onto our film as a type of credit; we did this so people would know who was in the film and what it was called. We were also able to create our radio trailer on this by using the clips from our film and just hiding the video, we also recorded a voice over and were able to add them to our radio trailer on final cut express.

Photoshop
Photoshop- We used Photoshop quite a lot during our project, first to create our logo and secondly to create our posters. The fact some of us do graphics helped us a lot because we were able to use Photoshop confidently and created professionally looking work. Our goldfish on a tricycle logo worked really well a as we were able to use it in all our work and it looked really good. Also because we created our posters on Photoshop we were able to create dark effects with bright red writing which made it look really effective and made it stand out really well.

Google
Google- we also depended on Google a lot as it helped us with our research into other films, the thriller genre and also other thing we needed to know for our film. This helped us a lot as it made it easier to see what people would expect of our film being a thriller. Also after researching age certificates we were able to decide which age certificate would be best for the film we were trying to create. Also we were able to get a lot of pictures of Google to illustrate most of the ideas we had about what we wanted things to look like.

YouTube
YouTube- As well as Google YouTube was a big help in our research as we were able to look at other thriller films and show illustrate the ideas we had. For example we wanted to create a how to make fake blood video, so we looked on YouTube to see how others have done it, this also helped us understand what we would need to make the video. By doing this we were able to create a successful video on how to make fake blood. As well as research YouTube also plays a big part in our actual film as we have to upload it on YouTube to get it on Google blogger, and also this helps people see if so we can get a wide range on audience feedback.

Word
Word- We also used word alot to create our script, write down ideas and also plan this evoluation befor putting in to google blogger. Word it just an easier way to make notes and write down thing we needed for out film.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does the media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

1. Our short film features common media features such as 180 degree rule, as well as following continuity within filming and editing. This enabled us to make a short film which followed conventions of standard film making. We stuck with the main themes of our genre of thriller by providing tense moments and eire ominous parts which provided a sense of dread towards the audience. We used fast editing with in murder scenes to add even more a sense of anger and aggression which increased the pace over all of these parts. This worked really effectively in comparison with our scenes of normality with in our film, as there were filmed and edited with little shots in them as this slowed the pace.

Within filming we used lighting to help represent different things in our film for instance when our character "louise" comes home and finds "Ben" in the kitchen we used lighting to try and show the separate distinctions of good and bad by putting "louise" in a lighter part of the room, and putting "ben" into darkness. This is a visual way of not only showing the separations in mental stability but because "louise" is walking into darkness it creates an ominous feel to the scene.

This video shows how different lighting styles similar to the ones we used can provde different effects.

Location wise, using one set location provides an a sense of being trapped for characters and that can't escape from the events that are about to unfold. The only downside of this was that it didn't allow us to expand our characters into different settings to get a sense of their personalities, or add more settings which could have provided more tension or suspense to a situation, as the only location we provided was one that was homely. This means that it provided a warmer feeling to the over all setting of the film, rather than a more ominous feeling which would have been more appropriate.

Costumes- For our characters appearances we wanted to keep them all looking pretty similar so that they all appeared linked, we stuck to dark colours mainly to co inside with the theme of the film.
Sounds- The falling down the stairs scene is the one with the most realistic sounds in it, mainly because the bangs and tumble noises were real, this ended up sounding really good in the end, especially the bang to the head at the bottom of the first fall on the stairs and the head bang on the floor after the her neck is broken. However i would have liked to have added an additional sound of something cracking to give more emphasis towards the breaking of the neck, to create a more shocking moment.

2. Conventions of our genre were reflected deliberately as we tried to stick to the normal expectations of the genre its self, as this meant that it would be easier to understand as a thriller. It features a suburban area which is a location area that is normal featured within thrillers, mainly to add a sense of normality within the film itself and works well in our own project. Violence is also a central plot in the film which is the constant expectation within thriller films, however in other thriller the violent scenes are normally filled with a higher suspense which i think our film is lacking in as it instantly jumps into the violence without leading up to it which is normally seen within this genre. As a thriller is fulfils standard expectations however it doesn't contain the really high suspense moments which i would have wanted to convey. Also unlike standard thrillers where the situation is resolved we have left it so that the murderer is able to get away with what he has done. Leaving the ending open which is uncommon within the genre. This deliberate subversion of the standardised ending within thrillers is important to our films plot as it shows that it is capable of happening again and to anyone else, especially since it ends with our murderer asking for new room mates.

3.  Our film doesn't parody or pastiche any of the codes in a thriller as it abides by common relations with the genre. We intentionally tried to keep away from referencing towards other films as we wanted to create a stronger sense of normality within the film, as we thought referencing towards other films would break the idea that this was a internal decision for the character.

4.  Altering our pace of editing within separate scenes was used to create a high aspect of pace with in our more dramatic scenes is also added more tension as it allowed the audience to question what was going to happen next. We separated our film into separate parts, in a way of days, this meant that the audience knew how long it took for the events to unfold and also allowed them to question what was about to happen. As a thriller the aim of the film is to induce fear and suspense onto the audience, i think that our film has some of these elements within it however i don't think it fulfils the full potential that it had to do this, although it has scenes where it shocks the audience, we could have produced a film that contains the same elements it does now, whilst leading up to it in a more interesting way, this would have the created a stronger feeling within the audience which would have been more effective for our film. Due to our conjoining scenes between the murders it does apply a build up of suspense which is important in our film and any thriller, however i am unsure if they provide the most dramatic implications that i would have been preferred.

5.

American Psycho is a similar idea to our theme, anger over trivial things. This scene dictates when Patrick Bateman kills Paul Allen in cold blood, over something that he wanted. This instantaneous anger over trivial things is something that we could transform into our own film. The main aspect which is something that transpires in our film is that the main character Patrick is seemingly an ordinary person which allows a sense of realism towards this film as it could be that this situation could happen in other circumstances. Applying it to our own film, it is similar as our murder is an ordinary person, and has snapped over something trivial. His girlfriend spending more time with her best friend than him. This adds a more fearful perspective towards our film as it could be a situation this is seen within other peoples lives. This links in with our theme of a thriller as it has tension and a horror aspect as well however it is applied towards real life situations within our film.

With american psycho the main character is portrayed as a normal man, this is projected with his dress sense as he wears suits which transpires onto his job as a business man within the film. This outer personality only shows some aspects of his psychotic nature however they are subsequently transferred into doubt onto the rest of the characters because of his outer stereotypical  male persona.

This is similarly seen within our own film, we have projected the idea of normal stereotypical conventions on our own murderer by creating the idea that he is a standard teenage boy. This creates an even more twisted sense towards our film as it provides the idea that anyone is capable of the things shown within our film.

Patrick Bateman, commits his murders when he sees things he is objective too, he mainly uses women as his victims which is similar to our film. Unlike American psycho, where the women he murders have no personal attachment to him, in our film it provides a more intense sense of murder as it features character which are supposed to be close as they all live together. However similarly they are murdered in abrupt cases of violence which apply a more intense murder.
